How to Share the Gospel

Step 1: Start a conversation

The first step in sharing the Gospel is to get into a conversation.

Begin naturally – say hello, offer to help, or ask a thoughtful question. The goal is to connect with the person, not push a message.

EXAMPLES:

  • Hi, how’s your day going?
  • Can I help you with that?
  • Did you know that God loves you?
  • Can I tell you about the best thing that’s ever happened to me?

Steer the Conversation Toward Jesus

As the conversation flows, listen carefully and show genuine interest. Just like Jesus started the conversation about water with the woman at the well and went on to talk about living water, you can stay with everyday themes, like purpose, fear, or hope, and gently guide them toward spiritual truth.

When you’re empathetic and present, you’ll naturally pick up on moments where you can share about Jesus, whether it’s through your story, a simple truth, or an offer to pray.

TIP: Try to understand where they are spiritually by asking gentle, open questions like:

  • “What does faith mean to you?”
  • “What do you think of when you hear the word ‘God’?”

Listening carefully helps you know how to share the Gospel in a way that speaks to them.

Share your story

One of the most powerful tools you have is your own story. You can share your faith journey in three simple parts:

  1. What was your life like before Jesus?
  2. How did you come to know Him?
  3. How has your life changed since then?

You might also want to talk about how you found purpose and meaning, experienced peace, or witnessed God’s healing power in your life.

TIPS:

  • Keep it around three minutes – get to the heart of the matter.
  • Use everyday words – avoid church jargon.
  • Be honest and real. Don’t exaggerate or try to impress.

Step 2: SHARE THE GOSPEL

When you reach the point in the conversation where you’re sharing your story, try to naturally steer it toward the gospel. It doesn’t have to be complicated – explaining it can be simpler than we often think.

You might say something like:

“What I’ve experienced, you can experience too. It starts with a relationship with God. He offers that connection to anyone who wants it, it’s been His plan from the beginning…”

(from there, you can continue explaining the gospel in your own words)

Remember, the real power to change lives comes from the gospel and the Holy Spirit. Our role is simply to share the message clearly and authentically, because people can only respond if they’ve heard it.

You can use THE FOUR symbols to help you clearly and confidently explain the gospel in a simple, structured way.

GOD LOVES ME

God loves people so much that from the very beginning, His plan was to have a relationship with us. At that time, everything in the world was perfect — no wars, no sickness, no injustice. People lived in peace and harmony with God.

“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” Genesis 1:31

I LIVE APART FROM GOD

People chose to turn away from God and do things their own way. This choice brought guilt and separation between us and God. Today, we see the effects of this — conflict, lies, jealousy, sickness, and war. But the biggest problem is that this guilt separates us from God forever. And there’s nothing we can do to fix that by ourselves.

“When he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.” John 16:8-9

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

JESUS GAVE EVERYTHING FOR ME

We can’t fix this ourselves, but God made a way. Because He loves us, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus took our guilt upon Himself when He died on the cross, and by doing that, God forgave us. On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead, just like He said He would. He’s alive today, and through Him, the way back to God is open.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” John 3:16

WILL I CHOOSE TO FOLLOW JESUS?

Jesus has restored the relationship between us and God. We can choose to live with God by accepting this gift through faith and by trusting him. Would you like to do that today?

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

Step 3: LEAD SOMEONE TO CHRIST

The decision to follow Jesus is the most important decision in life. Ask that person if he would like to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Pray this simple prayer together with him:

PRAYER

“Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. I believe that you died for my sins. Please forgive me that I’ve lived without you and forgive me my sins. I believe that you rose again from the dead and are alive today. I invite you into my life and receive you as my Lord and Savior. I will follow you for the rest of my life. Amen.”
